Where It All Began?

Nokia began as a paper mill then a rubber plant in Southwest Finland in1865. A merger occurred in 1967 that joined Finnish Cable and Nokia Corporation was born. 1979 witnessed Nokia take a giant leap into the telecommunications industry and has been on the forefront ever since. Today, Nokia remains the premier telecommunications company and on the cutting edge of the industry.

How It All Began?

The first phone Nokia introduced was the Nokia 1011. 1011 referred to the tenth of November, the date the phone was released to the public. The phone is a dinosaur compared to the phones of today. The phone held 99 preprogrammed numbers, the talk time was 90 minutes and wait time was 12 hours. The phone was no frills phone that contained no memory card, no camera, no Bluetooth application and no signature Nokia ring tone. The phone measured approximately 8”x2.5”x1.8” and weighed just over a pound. In today’s mobile device and phone market, that size and weight is a monster.

Nokia Smart Phone

Nokia first released a smart phone in 1996, the Nokia 9000. A smart phone is an electronic, handheld device that integrates PC capabilities, personal digital assistant and the functionality of a mobile phone. The device is an all in one phone, camera, music and video player, GPS and other functions and capabilities. The Nokia 9000 functioned as a PDA and phone device. It contained 8 megabytes of memory. The megabyte distribut
ion was 4 megabytes for the applications, 2 megabytes for user data and 2 megabytes for program memory. Today, Nokia offers a smart phone that can do it all. You can make a call, surf the web, watch videos or listen to music, take care of email, conduct business, check your calendar, play games or do research. The wonders of technology allow the user to do all that and then some from one device.
