GPS technology has become common place in our cars. This same technology is now available to track your dog at all times.

Dog collars come in thousands of styles and colors and functions. There are choking dog collars, specialty dog collars for greyhounds, adjustable dog collars, nylon collars and of course the list goes on and on. Well, we have a relatively new one to add to the list. The GPS dog collar has been growing in popularity of the last couple of years. This collar is high tech and allows a dog owner to keep track of their dog at all times. It is only a matter of time before the cost comes down enough to allow all dog owners the peace of mind to always know where their dog is.

We all know that technology keeps getting smaller and smaller. The GPS technology has got so small that it can now fit inside a dog collar. If you want to pay the big bucks it is now possible to have a GPS chip surgically inserted into your dog. This of course comes at a very high price but for many dog owners it's a price they are willing to pay.

So just how does a high tech dog collar work? Well, the GPS unit that is imbedded in the dog collar contains the GPS modem, which can transmit signals back and forth from the GPS satellites. This is what allows the owner to track the dogs location. It's the same concept as GPS units we use in our cars.

Great the dog has a high tech collar, what's next? Well, the GPS dog collar also has it's very own phone number which the owner can call from anywhere in the entire world and get instant information on exactly where their dog is at. This information is sent to the user over SMS or most commonly referred to as text messages. If the dog collar tracking system allows, a owner is able to log into a website and track their pet in real time. This has become a very popular feature and is becoming more commonly offered by the GPS dog collar companies.

GPS dog collars are very small, lightweight, and many products are actually waterproof. The collars can range in weight but it is not uncommon for them to weigh around 250 grams without the belt. There are many manufacturers of GPS dog collars. The price of a GPS collar starts at around $1,000. It's a steep price but it also provides the dog owner with a lot of security.
