Brief HistoryThe company was originally named as Gateway 2000 and was founded in the year 1985. It was one of the steady companies in the field of direct sales of PC in the earlier period. During early 90s, it became a very popular brand and had been supplying computer hardware. It used to give some well-known advertisement in the computer shopper and other magazines. The company was acquired by AOL in 1999. In the early period of 2000 the company struggled hard to place itself within first 500 Fortune companies. It failed repeatedly but continued its efforts to stand as a successful entity. Still in the year 2007, the company decided to sell the business to MPC Corporation. This being an unlucky effort the MPC Corporation went to liquidation and the customers as also the shareholders of the company became nowhere. Ultimately, in October 2007 Acer Inc. came to the rescue of the company and thus the Gateway was saved.
Business policy change In the year 2002, the company proceeded to manufacture plasma TVs and they placed their quality product at such competitive price before the consumers, major share of the market in the particular product section came into their grip. Both through internet and call centers they are selling the consumer items to the small customers segment. The professional segment is doing business with the institutions mainly, including the educational institutions and Government agencies. The retail segment is doing the business with the retail chain stores, Laptop superstores, warehouse clubs etc. Ultimately the retail channel has become the largest selling segment of the company. The numerous ups and downs of the company have now reached the corporation to an altitude of remarkable achievement. It has really refurbished itself to a commendable height.
